Existing cabinets could pose a risk when upgrading to new countertops for your kitchen or bathroom. |
Depending on the age, material quality and the fact that houses shift, older cabinets may not be able to sufficiently support your new stone countertops. Before you decide to re-use your older cabinets, ask yourself the following questions:
Is my cabinetry level?
Uneven cabinets may need to be shimmed and therefore increase the risk of breaking the stone surfaces.
Are my cabinets strong enough?
Stone countertops weigh a lot more than laminate and require a solid foundation to support the mass of granite or quartz.
Am I going to miss out on features and style?
Setting stylish and modern quartz atop of outdated cabinetry will look less than impressive. Features of new cabinets, such as soft close doors and drawers and additional storage options are likely absent in your existing ones. Old cabinets may also be a stark contrast to your upgraded appliances.
Don’t upgrade for the sake of upgrading. Your older cabinets could in fact be better built than many new ones, particularly if you plan on buying them from one of the box stores. Upgrade to new cabinetry if style and features are important to you and if your existing ones would cost too much to fix.
